Navitas Learning and Teaching Services offers a range of professional development programs that are designed to promote contemporary teaching, encourage sharing of the great practice across our network of teachers and to support the move to Navitas Core Moodle.

Our suite of courses explores practical strategies and guiding principles for teaching in blended and online environments.

The content, structure and activities of the courses are designed to develop core skills, showcase innovations and share strategies which can be adapted into teaching practice. 

 

 

 


1. Effective Teaching at Navitas

This 5-week pilot course aims to provide new teachers with a structured understanding of the learning and teaching approaches and ideas at the core of the student experience within Navitas. You will have the opportunity to explore and create a personal learning and teaching philosophy which supports your students in their learning journey.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe how your teaching practice is situated within the higher education landscape and Navitas context
  • Explain the importance of aligning teaching, learning and assessment activities for coherence using constructive alignment as a principle
  • Appraise a variety of learner-centred teaching strategies in the context of higher education
  • Appraise a variety of feedback and assessment strategies
  • Evaluate your own teaching practice against established higher education standards


2. Engagement & Motivation

This 5-week course examines how we as teachers can support and encourage student engagement and motivation for learning in the online environment. The content, structure, activities and design of the course will provide you with an action learning approach to improving the effectiveness of their teaching in an online or blended environment.

Learning outcomes

  • Discuss the importance of student (and teacher) engagement and motivation
  • Participate in, and reflect on, the purpose of introductory and other activities in a course
  • Use learning tools to analyse class discussions and make suggestions for improving engagement and motivation in your own course
  • Develop strategies that support a reflective and scholarly approach to your teaching practice
  • Develop and present a plan for the improvement of your teaching practice with particular regard to student engagement
  • Engage in, and contribute to a shared community of practice


3. Assessment Marking & Feedback

This 5-week course focuses on the challenges in supporting student learning in assessment marking and the provision of feedback. The course is designed to engage you in an action learning approach to reflect on your practice. You will be able to apply the strategies learned in the course to enhance your teaching practice around assessment marking and feedback.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe your role as an educator in relation to managing assessment and providing feedback
  • Discuss the main issues involved in assessment marking and feedback
  • Develop strategies to improve marking and feedback practice
  • Discuss the range of technologies that support assessment in the online environment, including Turnitin
  • Engage in, and contribute to a shared community of practice


4. Learning Design Essentials

This 5-week course will introduce you to the principles and practice of learning design. You will explore strategies you can use to create a coherent and consistent course that applies the best elements of educational design, allowing you to integrate face-to-face and online learning more effectively. The course will also cover techniques to maximise student engagement in blended learning environments.

Learning outcomes

  • Evaluate your teaching practice in order to establish key priorities for reviewing and (re)developing an aligned curriculum to maximise student success
  • Compose a narrative to describe your unit
  • Apply the key principles behind active learning, particularly in a blended learning environment
  • Document student activities using lesson plans
  • Reflect on the experience of being a student in an online learning environment
  • Engage in, and contribute to, a shared community of practice


5. Blended Learning Essentials

This 5-week course is designed to help you develop experience in, and a working understanding of successful online teaching pedagogies that can be applied to their own teaching contexts. The content, structure, activities and design of the course reflects the progress of teaching through a standard term and engages you in an action learning approach to improving the effectiveness of your teaching.

  • Implement a range of online teaching strategies to engage students in learning
  • Apply skills in the use of learning technologies
  • Contribute meaningfully to an online learning community
  • Reflect on the experience of being a student in an online learning environment


6. Building in Navitas Core Moodle

This 5-week course introduces you to the features and functions of Navitas Core Moodle. Learn how to use this versatile learning management system to enhance the learning experiences of your students. You will create a fit-for-purpose activity in Moodle to address a learning and teaching issue. At the end of the course, you will showcase your Moodle solution and receive feedback from your peers.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe your technology-enhanced learning and teaching practices through established frameworks
  • Recognise the pedagogical affordances of tools on Moodle
  • Create a Moodle solution to address a specific learning and teaching issue
  • Explain key considerations relating to accessibility and navigational issues in regards to your Moodle solution
  • Evaluate your Moodle solution against established criteria and standards
