HEA Fellowships: Recognising teaching excellence at Navitas

Navitas is proud to be a global member of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) – one of the most well-known and respected global bodies championing teaching excellence in higher education.

The HEA Fellowship program recognises personal and institutional commitment to professionalism in learning and teaching. Fellows of the HEA are recognised for their practice, impact and leadership of teaching and learning.

Recently, nine Navitas staff were awarded HEA Fellowships. They join a growing community which now includes 100,000 HEA Fellows from 88 countries.

Congratulations to the following Navitas staff on their achievements. Their demonstration of commitment to excellence in teaching, and focus on impact for student learning is to be commended.

  • Matthew Thurgood (Senior Lecturer & Course Coordinator, NCPS)

Fellowships are awarded on the basis of successful and effective demonstration of the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF). There are four categories of Fellowship that can be applied for: Associate Fellow, Fellow, Senior Fellow, and Principal Fellow.

Two of our new Senior Fellows share some brief reflections on the process below:

“For me, the best part of the HEA Fellowship journey was leading the team of dedicated and skilled Navitas practitioners through the process of reflection and documentation of evidence.”

  – Dr Margot McNeill

“Fellowship was a validation of years of hard work, and the direction that the work has travelled. It can be difficult to find a mentor or mentoring process that is general enough to transcend personal relationships. I do think that access to a global community of fellows and building a ‘fellowship community’ at Navitas is one way to help that.”

 – Dr Colin Webber

“Receiving feedback, reflecting on practice, and articulating what you are doing and why you are doing it, are all really useful and grounding activities. I feel far more confident now in talking about evidence of distance travelled and the difference we make.”

 – Ann Wilson

“Being involved in the HEA Fellowship process has made me consider what I do in the classroom and the way my practices impact on my students… It has made me think about how I engage students in both lectures and tutorials, and the ways I can ensure that all students are involved in learning as much as possible.”

Matthew Thurgood

“I would definitely recommend the HEA Fellowship process to others, as it provides an opportunity to create a portfolio of your practice which integrates your professional values with research and sound pedagogical frameworks. The recognition of my professional career has been very rewarding.”

                                                                             – Christina Del Medico
