Break it down: Exploiting a model text

With the power of visible pedagogy in mind, Richard Ingold shares a detailed example of how to introduce and use a model text with Academic English students. The process can be broken down to four stages: lead-in, comprehension, analysis, and consolidation.

Explicitly and visibly teaching discourse strategies and structures through analysis and deconstruction of text through approaches such as genre-based pedagogies can enable students to access powerful genres and reproduce them effectively, empowering them in the process’ (Mahboob & Tilakaratna, 2012).

This presentation was originally shared with English language teachers across Sydney at the last MeetELT event. Upon request, Richard jumped online to re-share this thought-provoking, interactive session
