Embedding H5P content into your Moodle space

H5P is a free and open-source tool that allows you to create a myriad of interactive content, to be interspersed in your unit’s Moodle site. It encourages students to actively engage with unit material by providing them with bite-sized, chunked information. In our previous blog post, we looked at some of the ways you can start to use H5P as a tool to implement active learning opportunities in your classroom.

In this article, we will go through some of the technical aspects of embedding H5P content in your unit space.

How do I create and embed H5P activities into Moodle?

There are two different ways of creating and embedding H5P content into your Navitas Core Moodle site. Firstly, some NCM sites already have the H5P plugin installed. This means that you can create H5P content through Moodle itself. Creating a H5P activity directly in Moodle means that it is gradeable and can link to the gradebook. If this plugin is still to be installed, don’t worry! You can create interactive activities directly on the H5P website and embed them in your course.

Creating content on the H5P site to embed into Moodle

The H5P site contains over 30 different types of content creation tools. Use the instructions on the site to create your preferred activities. Next, embed these activities into your Moodle unit space. It is recommended that you use this method only if your Moodle instance does not have the H5P plugin. The maximum file size for a H5P activity created on the site is 15MB.

In this short video, our L&T Learning Designer, Ges Ng, explains how to embed a H5P learning interactive from the H5P site into your Moodle space.

Tip: Ensure the embed button is checked when you save your H5P content type. This creates the URL code you can use to embed that content type into Moodle.

Creating H5P content in Moodle

If your Moodle instance allows you to create H5P activities directly in your unit space, use the following video to learn how to create the activity, steps on uploading a previously created H5P file for reuse, and the stealth activities option.

Tip: You can ‘stealth’ the activity to embed within different Moodle tools (e.g. Moodle books). ‘Stealth activities’ is a new Moodle updated function, previously known as ‘orphaned activities’. It allows you to hide your Moodle resource/activity but make it still accessible via a weblink.

As with any activity in your unit space, it is useful to think about its placement: as a scaffolding exercise, link to assessment, practice opportunity, or to just have fun learning content!

For H5P, these examples may assist:

  • Embed H5P in Moodle books to break up written content and allow students to practice and reinforce learning.
  • Embed H5P as Moodle labels to serve as a spacer in breaking up unit content.
  • Embed H5P activities in Moodle pages to encourage group work, in-class activities and after-class follow up.
