Getting started: Assessment rubrics

Assessment rubrics provide guidelines in what to look for when marking student work and often are written in a matrix format. There are many benefits in using an assessment rubric, including:

  • Fairer and more accurate – they provide consistency in evaluating student work from the first to the last assessment being marked.
  • Clear and defensible – they let students know what is expected of them and teachers can justify why a certain grade was given.
  • Efficient – if multiple teachers use the same rubric for a student’s essay, they would arrive at the same score or grade

In these two short videos, Ann talks about what an assessment rubric is and why you should use them, and in the second video, demonstrates how you can make your own rubric by taking you through an example.
