Independent learning is critical for success in higher education. University study requires students to take responsibility for their own learning and to make decisions about what they want to focus on.
This transition from previous study is not always easy, especially for students who may be used to having more teacher support, who have had negative learning experiences or come from a culture that understands the principles of independent learning differently to their new context.
Teachers, students and institutions have a shared responsibility for creating a culture and environment which allows students to succeed.
In this session, Paul will share the Independent Learning Charter which has been in place across Navitas colleges in the UK. The session will explore questions including:
- How can students be supported in their independent learning?
- How can colleges and teachers promote independent learning?
- How do we give students practical guidance in developing independent learning skills and strategies?
This discussion-driven webinar will invite participants to share approaches to directing and supporting independent learning at their colleges, and gather further ideas to bring this topic to life.
Academic services and teaching staff from across Navitas’ global learning and teaching community are warmly encouraged to share their experiences and ideas. Whilst open to all Navitas staff, this session is particularly relevant to those at colleges who deliver to (or intend to deliver to) domestic students alongside their international cohorts.
