MeetELT ‘Take it off…the page!’: Activities to lift students out of the textbook

‘Take it off…the page!’ was the second meetELT event hosted in Melbourne. MeetELT is a professional development event for English language teachers, with events hosted in Sydney and Melbourne. The aim of the long-running event is to bring engaging, accessible PD to teachers through a night of social networking.

The theme for this event focussed on an area of lesson planning where teachers realise, simply turning the page of the textbook isn’t going to excite students, or even the teachers themselves.

We all want to be able to motivate and extend our students, leaving them with a variety of emotions about their learning experiences — feelings that translate into connecting with the lesson, material and English more positively.

Teachers often have a wealth of ideas that they access to engage their students, from something as simple as using a set of cards to stimulate speaking, to planning lessons on the go.

The night included presentations from:

  • Athanassia Iosifidou – Forget reporting… start ‘rapporting’!
  • Sarah Chamberlain – What’s in your pencil case?
  • Alison Black – Jump into AI
  • Tetiana Rudovska – Grammar on the go
  • Cameron Rowe – Exploiting texts with multi-skilling
  • Vesna Stefanov – Hot topics! (Access ‘Hot topics! cards’ here)
