Navitas Learning and Teaching (C&I) Podcasts Series One: Transformation in Tertiary Education

The theme of transformation has occupied the minds and efforts of the higher education sector in this time of pandemic. Series one podcasts consider forward-thinking on transforming learning and teaching prompted by the challenges faced by educators in a year that has forced profound changes on us all. Leading educational thinkers in Navitas Careers and Industry discuss topics with Raf Marcellino, Executive General Manager of Learning and Teaching (C&I), in an engaging series of conversations. The topic of each podcast flowed from the 2020 Global SAE Webinars held in May 2020.


Episode 1: Virtual Tools with Mark Bassett

In our first episode, Raf and Mark discuss the application of virtual tools in learning and deep-dive into the creation of virtual consoles within the Max software environment, and the implications for learning and teaching in SAE globally.

Dr Mark Bassett is the Director of Academic Quality Assurance, Licensed Territories, for the SAE Institute’s campuses in Amman, Belgrade, Bucharest, Bogotá, Cape Town, Dubai, Jakarta, Johannesburg, and Mexico City. Mark is also a Senior Lecturer in SAE Australia’s Masters of Creative Industries program where he teaches several postgraduate classes on programming audio applications within the Max software environment.


Episode 2: Digital Learning with Josh Valeri

How do we learn in a digital age? How should we be learning digitally? Raf and Josh define what digital learning is, what it can be and how it can transform and enhance learning.

Josh Valeri is Head of Digital Learning and Innovation for Navitas Careers & Industry Division. He has overseen digital learning transformations in the private and public sector for the last five years.


Episode 3: Holistic Assessment with Luke McMillan

Raf and Luke discuss the holistic assessment model in the context of SAE as well as unpacking the “Three Ps” and their importance in assessing creative media holistically.

Dr Luke McMillan is Dean of SAE Australasia and Academic President, SAE Dubai. His commitment to excellence in learning, teaching and assessment has seen him responsible for the development and implementation of organizational change in these areas. Luke is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and holds undergraduate qualifications in Popular Music and post-graduate qualifications in game design and game audio.


Episode 4: The Service Model with Lucy Schulz

In this episode, Raf and Lucy discuss the importance of a service model in the delivery of tertiary education, and how Navitas can set themselves apart in terms of tailoring an exceptional student experience.

Lucy Schulz is Executive General Manager, Human Services, Business and Technology in the Careers & Industry division. Prior to this role, Lucy led the enhancement of Deakin’s Cloud Campus reflecting on the whole student experience; not only fostering a progressive teaching and learning environment, but also building on digital capabilities and service culture.


Episode 5: Digital Fluency with Luca Bucciarelli

In our penultimate episode, Raf and Luca discuss digital literacy versus digital fluency and its role in guiding creative solutions for learning and remote practice.

Luca Bucciarelli is Dean of SAE Institute, South West Europe and is responsible for the development and implementation of SAE Institute’s academic and student experience strategic plan of the South West Europe Region (8 campuses in 7 countries). As a functional leader of faculty and student services, Luca is accountable for Learning Design, Quality Assurance, Technology Enhanced Learning and activities to ensure sector best practice.


Episode 6: Remote Practice with Keith Hennigan

In our final episode of the season, Raf and Keith talk about successful strategies for remote practice, considered leveraging of technology and learning how to work with people in a different context.

Keith Hennigan is Acting Dean at SAE UK where he also serves as Manager of University Partnerships. Keith holds a PhD in music technology from Trinity College Dublin. He has worked as course, department and team leader in different institutions since 2015.
