The University of Idaho Global Student Success Program – Spring 2018 Lecture Series

Supporting excellence in teaching international students and English language learners

The University of Idaho launched the Global Student Success Program in partnership with Navitas in 2017 and kicked off its first annual Spring Lecture Series for 2018. The goal of the series was to share research and skills to support best practices in teaching international students and English language learners. The event brought together experienced faculty members from the Global Student Success Program and the American Language and Culture Program at the University of Idaho.

Lecture 1 – Linguistically Responsive Teaching: Strategies to support international students and language learners

Colourful buildingsWatch the first lecture in this series. Margot Volem, M.Ed., Student Success Manager for the Global Student Success Program, presents key theories in second language acquisition (SLA) research and explores how they can inform practices in Linguistically Responsive Teaching.


Lecture 2 – International millennials: Language learners’ needs for success

Ibtesam Hussein, Ph.D., Instructor Faculty, American Language & Culture Program and Katie Schiffelbein, Director, American Language & Culture Program, investigate common teaching and learning strategies faculty used in their classes. They share key strategies with findings from the literature and their own experience teaching English language learners.


Lecture 3 – Strategies for giving effective written feedback to international students

Mail boxWatch the third lecture in the series. Chad Eller, M.Ed., Global Student Success Program and American Language & Culture Program Faculty, talks about the reposition of your role as an error-corrector to one of “fellow traveler” alongside your students’ ideas. In a refreshing look at giving student feedback on writing, Chad uses examples from his own reflections on grading to help faculty to avoid common pitfalls.
